Pressured by drought, drug cartel violence, and over-all poverty, and pulled by the lure of opportunities in nearby cities, more than half of the Tarahumara have left their traditional life in the Sierra Madre Mountain range, and have ventured to face new challenges pursuing their culture. But the cities have proven dangerous; Tarahumara find themselves marginalized, begging, with uncertain employment opportunities. Physical and sexual abuse are widespread.
